The economy is inclined to grow in May to July 2019

The Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes for January 2019 shows a better performance as compared to the preceding month. Supported by the current trend of Leading Index (LI) which started to increase, the economy is inclined to grow in May to July 2019. The monthly change of  LI recorded an increase of 1.3 per cent to 118.9 points in January 2019 from 117.4 points in December 2018. Number of Housing Units Approved (0.7%) and Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.4%) were the main impetus to the growth of LI. The annual change of LI remained negative (-1.1%) but better than in the previous month (-1.7%). The LI is designed to indicate the direction of economy for an average of four to six months ahead.

The Coincident Index (CI) which represents the current economic performance, increased 0.5 per cent in January 2019. The components that significantly contributed to the increase were Total Employment in Manufacturing sector and Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing sector which registered 0.3 per cent, respectively. Concurrently, the annual change of CI grew at 4.1 per cent.

The Diffusion Index for CI continued above 50.0 per cent (83.3%). However, the Diffusion Index for LI was below 50.0 per cent (28.6%) in January 2019.
