Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance decreased in August 2015. The LI posted a decrease of 0.9% to 117.6 points from 118.7 points in July 2015. Two components that recorded the highest percentage decrease were Number of Housing Units Approved (-0.9%) and Expected Sales Value in Manufacturing sector (-0.4%). The annual change of LI declined to negative 0.2% from 0.4% in the previous month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, grew 1.0% in the reference month. Three out of six components of CI recorded an increase led by Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing sector (0.6%), followed by Total Employment in Manufacturing sector and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing sector which registered 0.3%, respectively. The annual change of CI recorded a growth of 0.6% as compared to 0.4% in July 2015.

The LI recorded a lower annual change as compared to the previous month. However, the annual change of CI showed an improvement in August 2015. The Diffusion Index for LI reached 57.1%, while CI at 50.0%. Taken together the recent behaviour of the composite indexes, it is expected that the Malaysian economy will continue to expand at a slower rate in the following months.
