MALAYSIA'S WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE SALES REGAINED ITS PRE-PANDEMIC LEVEL AT RM116.4 BILLION IN OCTOBER 2021, AN INCREASE OF 5.4 PER CENT YEAR-ON-YEAR
HIGHLIGHTS
Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM116.4 billion in October 2021, registered a growth of 5.4 per cent year-on-year. The increase was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles 10.2 per cent, Retail Trade 5.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade 4.4 per cent.
In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 1.3 per cent year-on-year to record 132.0 points. The increment was supported by the increase of 7.0 per cent and 2.2 per cent in Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade, respectively. On the other hand, Wholesale Trade recorded a negative growth of -1.2 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 5.9 per cent month-on-month in October 2021.
Wholesale Trade
Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.8 billion in October 2021 with a positive growth of 4.4 per cent as against October 2020. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 13.1 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco 10.6 per cent and Other Specialised Wholesale 5.1 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 5.3 per cent.
Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 131.9 points, contracted -1.2 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-10.3%), Other Specialised Wholesale (-4.1%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (-2.4%). However, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased 3.4 per cent month-on-month.
Retail Trade
Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 5.1 per cent as compared to October 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (28.6%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (17.8%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.4%), Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (8.7%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.2%). Compared with September 2021, sales of this sub-sector went up 4.8 per cent.
Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 2.2 per cent to 138.5 points as compared to October 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (24.6%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (8.4%) and Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores (7.9%), Retail Sale Via Stalls & Markets (11.4%) and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (7.2%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased 3.0 per cent as against September 2021.
Motor Vehicles
Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of 10.2 per cent year-on-year. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles which rebounded 25.5 per cent in October 2021. On a monthly basis, sales of this sub-sector elavated 31.2 per cent.
The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 7.0 per cent year-on-year to reach 112.8 points. The increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles (28.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded 29.4 per cent month-on-month.
