19 from 33 selected agricultural commodities recorded self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) of more than 100 per cent in 2016

Selected agricultural commodities are divided into three categories namely selected crops, (fruits and vegetables), selected livestock and selected fisheries. In 2016, a total of 33 commodities were covered and 19  of them recorded self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) of more than 100 per cent.

Selected crops

  • Fruits

Ten of the thirteen selected fruits recorded SSR of more than 100 per cent. Papaya recorded the highest SSR of 158.7 per cent followed by watermelon (153.6%) and starfruit (140.1%). Per capita consumption (PCC) of coconut was the highest (17.0 kilogrammes per year) followed by durian (9.1 kilogrammes per year), pineapple and banana at 8.9 kilogrammes per year respectively.

  • Vegetables

Six selected vegetables recorded SSR of more than 100 per cent namely spinach, lady’s finger, long bean, brinjal, cucumber and tomato. PCC of mustard was the highest (6.9 kilogrammes per year) followed by tomato (5.4 kilogrammes per year), round cabbage (4.9 kilogrammes per year) and cucumber  (2.6 kilogrammes per year).

Selected livestock

SSR of chicken/duck egg (114.2%) was the highest followed by poultry meat (98.0%) and pork (92.6%) while mutton recorded the lowest SSR of 11.8 per cent. Poultry meat recorded the highest PCC of 51.2 kilogrammes per year followed by chicken/duck egg (21.3 kilogrammes per year) and pork (18.7 kilogrammes per year).

Selected fisheries

Two out of five selected fisheries namely shrimp and cuttlefish recorded SSR of more than 100 per cent. Shrimp recorded the highest SSR (103.2%) while SSR of crab was the lowest (85.3%) as compared to other selected fisheries. PCC of mackerel was the highest PCC among other selected fisheries at 7.2 kilogrammes per year followed by shrimp (4.1 kilogrammes per year) and tuna (2.4 kilogrammes per year). Crabs recorded the lowest PCC at 0.4 kilogrammes per year.
